I hope they have manual controls somewhere. Having analogue methods to control something incase of physical damage to the operating system is a benefit when you're lost in space and stranded. If you have a keyboard, you can still type even if your screen is gone. Analogue can be useful in some very rare instances. Not every step forward is actually better.

The catch; having real gauges and buttons is more comfortable than a touchscreen

it's insane 3 dudes managed to fly to the moon and back with just dial up internet type connections and a joy stick

It correlates with automation. Astronauts become less of pilots and more of passengers

Useless fact: The Soyuz TMK spacecraft carried a relatively standard, scientific calculators MK-52 with specialised ROM cartridges as an auxiliary navigation computers.

Captain here: falcon 9 display runs a special SpaceX-Made Linux. The UI is developed using LabView to visualize all telemetric data and give commands to the backend of the command module OS. So basically, both systems are not connected on the software side. The command modules sends and receives data from and to the displays and the ground command as well. Each monitor runs his own instance, so if one is failing, you can still use other display. If my information are correct it's quiet similar to the FMS/MCDU of modern airliners.

Knowing space programs... Having redundancies for redundancies of the actual instruments... Making a touch screen everything space ship mustve been a nightmare

Watonia Downing

hope the redundsnt batt doesnt fail because Im sure there is no generator. From experience flew one of these new full glass cockpit small planes, happen both batt died only 1 alternator (failed) ended up guessing alt speed and direction as not a single avionics. for those whose dont know analog avionics runs electrical vaccum and ramming air

Actually that's 3 photos

Yet only the oldest one actually made it to the moon.

Just dont put it on touchscreen only and disable the voice commands(which are in chinese). But nice technological advance epstien drive

I think it would still be better to have analog controls. I mean, what if the screen gets broken and touch controls does not work. They might have an overide for remote control via the control center on earth but what if that too fails. Still better to have knobs and switches.

Alma Agulto

Each touch target would have to be huge on that screen if the guy on the right is actually using his space gloves on it

Melissa Lynn Gilliland

It probably is inevitable, but this "everything being automated and controlled via touchscreens" thing kind of bothers me. I surely would trust a properly written software to drive or fly vehicles since humans are mostly terrible, still, it takes the "coolness" away. I think I'm old.

William Robert Leathers

Anyone else feeling really anxious they don’t have physical buttons anymore?
